• 1/2 tsp salt
• 170g unsalted butter

• 1/2 tsp ground cloves
• 1/4 tsp pepper, yes it is correct, it is not a mistake
• Pinch cayenne
• 1 1/4 cups packed dark brown soft sugar
• 1/4 cup molasses or black treacle or honey
• 2 large eggs

Mix the ingredients and the melted butter. Place the mixture in a cool place to firm up slightly, as it will be very sticky when rolling otherwise.
If you don’t want very thin cookies or don’t feel like rolling them out, you can shape them into small balls and flatten them with your hand, just as we did.
